From Haugesund to Perth
Petter Mæland, Software Developer in Omega 365 Software’s Europe division, spent six months in Perth, gaining new perspectives, closer ties with colleagues abroad, and firsthand insight into how Omega 365’s technology is used in daily operations.
Published: 17. November 2025When Petter expressed an interest in working abroad, he didn’t know that the opportunity would come more than a year later. During a visit from Omega 365 Australia’s General Manager, Emma Ireland, to the Haugesund office, she mentioned an opportunity to spend six months in Perth, and he didn’t think twice before saying yes.
“I had told my manager early on that I was interested in traveling for work,” Petter says. “So when Emma asked if anyone might want to join them for a while, my manager immediately thought of me.”
Working with the core technology platform
In Perth, Petter joined Omega 365 Australia’s team as part of the company’s ongoing exchange between offices. His role mainly involved supporting projects related to the Core Technology Platform (CTP). He held introductory presentations on app development within the platform and took part in client meetings as several organizations began transitioning to CTP.
“I’ve mostly worked with system development in Norway, so seeing how clients actually use Omega 365’s products in their daily operations has been incredibly valuable,” he explains. “I’ve been surrounded by people who are true experts in their fields, and that’s something I’ve learned a lot from.”
The experience gave him new professional perspectives and a stronger understanding of how Omega 365’s products are applied in real projects. It also allowed him to build closer connections with colleagues in another part of the world.
“Gaining experience is important for any employee. Giving them the chance to travel, meet people outside the office, and bring back both the connections and knowledge they’ve gained is highly valuable for us as a department moving forward,” says Department Manager Vidar Nordnes.
Everyday life in Perth
Adjusting to a new environment came naturally. “It was an amazing experience that I’ll always be grateful for. You quickly get used to a new routine, even when you’re far from home,” Petter says.
He describes the Perth team as both friendly and knowledgeable, making it easy to feel included from day one. “The first thing you notice about the team in Perth is how kind and skilled they are. Getting to know them couldn’t have been easier; by the second day, it felt like I’d known them for years.”
Some of his favorite moments were the small, simple routines that became part of daily life. “We often went for short morning walks to a nearby café to grab coffee before work. It was a nice way to start the day and connect with colleagues.”
He also appreciated the culture at the Perth office. “There’s no threshold for asking questions or sharing ideas. It’s an open and supportive environment where you can learn a lot from the people around you.”
At the same time, he noticed a few differences from the office in Haugesund. “It felt a bit more formal, maybe because it’s in a large office building downtown, and everyone dressed business-casual. It was a contrast to what I’m used to back home,” he says with a smile.
Exploring Western Australia
Outside of work, Petter made the most of his time in Australia. “I had many great experiences, from everyday city life to a teambuilding trip to the east coast with good food and great company,” he says.
When his parents came to visit, he took a few days off to explore more of Western Australia. “We went to Rottnest Island. It’s definitely worth a visit,” he says.
Living in Perth also offered a variety of things to do. “When you come from a smaller place like Haugesund, it’s amazing how many activities and opportunities a city like Perth has. I’m sure anyone staying there for a while would find something they enjoy or even discover new hobbies.”
Lasting impressions
As his six-month stay came to an end, Petter reflected on what he would miss most. “It’s the small, everyday things,” he says. “The morning coffee runs, the lunches out with colleagues, those little moments that made the days special.”
He also highlights the people and the positive atmosphere he experienced, both at work and outside it. “Everyone I met was friendly and welcoming. That’s probably what I’ll miss the most. And I can’t complain about the winter temperatures staying around 18 to 20 degrees either.”
Returning to Norway, Petter brings with him new experiences, professional knowledge, and friendships that will last far beyond his time in Australia. “It was an incredible opportunity, and I’m truly grateful I got to experience it.”
